Shey Phoksunda Lake Trek Introduction

Nestled within Shey Phoksundo National Park is a stunning freshwater lake known for its crystal-clear waters. This lake is also noted as the deepest of its kind in the country. A journey to this lake is often incorporated into longer treks through the Upper Dolpo region.

While the lake trek can be completed in roughly two weeks, a more extended 21-day itinerary is available for those seeking greater adventure. This longer route includes crossing two high mountain passes, Numa La and Baga La, which reach elevations above 5,000 meters.

Key experiences on this trek include discovering remote valleys, visiting traditional Buddhist villages, and witnessing incredible landscapes. Trekkers are also rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Great Himalayas and the Trans-Himalayan ranges.

Journey Highlights

  • Traverse a section of the Great Himalayan Trail.
  • Visit the deepest lake in Nepal, located within Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Shey Phoksunda Lake-Proposed 21-Day Trekking Itinerary

This organized adventure begins with a day in Kathmandu, including a guided tour of its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From there, travelers take a short flight to Nepalgunj, followed by another flight to Dunai, where the trek commences.

The path leads through less-traveled areas towards settlements like Tarakot and Dho Tarap, eventually reaching the base camp for Numa La Pass. The journey then crosses the two challenging high passes, Numa La and Baga La, before arriving at Ringmo Village and the famed lake.

After ample time to explore the Shey Phoksundo area, the return journey retraces steps to Juphal for flights back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj, concluding a remarkable trekking experience.

About Shey Phoksundo National Park
As the largest national park in Nepal, Shey Phoksundo spans an area of 3,555 square kilometers across the Dolpa and Mugu districts. It holds the distinction of being the country’s only national park in the trans-Himalayan region.

Climatic conditions are severe, with areas above 2,500 meters remaining snow-covered for much of the year, and temperatures above 3,000 meters often staying below freezing in winter.

Plant and Animal Life
The park boasts a diverse range of flora, including species like blue pine, spruce, juniper, and Himalayan birch. Its fauna is equally impressive, being home to wildlife such as the Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, musk deer, grey wolf, and Tibetan partridge.

Local Culture
The region is rich in Buddhist culture, dotted with ancient monasteries and religious sites. Shey Gompa, dating back to the 11th century, and the 900-year-old Thashung Gompa are significant landmarks. The traditional village of Ringmo sits near the lake. Most local inhabitants are farmers who practice Buddhism.

About the Lake
Shey Phoksundo Lake is an alpine freshwater lake at an elevation of 3,612 meters. The village of Ringmo is situated on a prehistoric landslide dam that helped form the lake. A major draw for visitors, the lake’s depth has been measured at over 140 meters.
