Gokyo to EBC Via Cho La Pass
After a short scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla(2,800m/9,184ft), the bold stride moves ahead towards a beautifully crafted Himalayan town which is nestled along the crescent shaped hill slopes, Namche bazaar. “Hall of fame” gallery of Sherpas who submitted Everest, Photos of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay (first climbers to reach at the peak) of Sherpa Museum at Namche Bazaar and due many other significant things, this place is considered as the administrative centre and historical capital of the Khumbu region.

This trekking route has many exciting climbs such as Gokyo Ri (5,483m/17,984ft), Cho La pass (5,368m/17,607ft), Everest Base Camp(EBC) (5,380m/17,646ft) and Kalapathar (5,545m/18,187ft) where the Himalayas secrets are crystalline. The travelers get to come across the beautiful Gokyo valley, viewing the grand Ngozumpa glacier which is the biggest glacier in Nepal and the magnificent view of Gokyo Lake (4,750m/15,580ft), the highest freshwater lake system in Nepal. The kalapatthar offers a delightful view icefalls and glaciers of Mahalangur Himalayan range which comprises of four major peaks above 8,000m – Mt. Everest, (8,848m), Mt. DAY 02: Fly to Lukla and Trek to Phakding.

You will either take a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (30 minute flight) or drive about 4 hours to Manthali Airport, followed by a 20-minute flight to Lukla. After landing at the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, the trek begins with a gentle downhill walk.
You will pass through Cheplung and Ghat villages, enjoying views of lush green valleys, pine forests, and the beautiful Dudh Koshi River. This region follows Buddhism, so you’ll see prayer flags, mani walls, and stupas along the way. After around 3–4 hours of walking, you’ll reach Phakding, a peaceful riverside village known for its lodges, bakeries, and tea houses. You’ll stay overnight at a lodge in Phakding.

DAY 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar.

After breakfast, your trek begins with uphill along the Dudh Koshi River. The trail offers views of forests, waterfalls, and prayer wheels. You’ll catch your first glimpse of Mt. Thamserku (6,608m).
At Monjo, you’ll enter the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trail features multiple suspension bridges, including the scenic Tenzing-Hillary Bridge. After that, the climb to Namche Bazaar becomes steeper and more physical demanding.
After about 2 hours of uphill trekking, you will reach at Namche Bazaar—a vibrant mountain town where tradition meets modernity. Here, you’ll find shops, cafes, bakeries, and beautiful mountain views. After checking into your lodge, enjoy a short walk around in the evening.

DAY 04: Acclimatization Day, Hike to Everest View Hotel.

Today is your first acclimatization day at Namche Bazar. You will rest to prevent from altitude sickness. After breakfast, you’ll hike up to the famous Everest View Hotel (3,800m). From here, enjoy panoramic views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, and more.
You can relax with a cup of tea or coffee while soaking in the stunning Himalayan scenery. Later, you’ll return to Namche Bazaar for lunch, rest, and an optional evening stroll.

DAY 05: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole.

After morning breakfast, you will start the trek by walking a short, gentle uphill trail, then continue on a flat path. On the way, you will have amazing views of the mountains, including Everest. Dole is a beautiful village that offers fabulous views of Thamserku and Kantenga.

DAY 06: Trek from Dole to Machhermo.

After morning breakfast, we will start our trek through a gradual ascent. The trail leads through an open valley. This day offers views of snow-capped peaks. DAY 07: Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo Lake.

After early morning breakfast, you will start the trek with a slightly uphill climb. The trail then follows a ridge. On the way, we will have beautiful views of Cho Oyu. As you climb up, you will pass many small lakes before reaching Gokyo Lake. Gokyo Lake is not just water—it holds spiritual significance, so it is considered sacred. From there, you will have amazing views of the mountains.

DAY 08: Early morning ascent to Gokyo Ri and full day excursion around the valley.

DAY 09: Trek from Gokyo Lake to Thangna.

After morning breakfast, we will start our trek, passing the glacier. The trail is rocky and some parts are icy too (depending on the time). It is a short and steady walk. On the way, you will see surrounding mountains view. Thangnak is a small settlement, nestled at the base of Cho La Pass.

DAY 10: Trek from Thangna to Dzongla via Cho La pass.

This day, we will have early breakfast and start the trek through an uphill trail—mostly ascending to Cho La Pass. This is the hardest day of the trek. On the way, we will see mesmerizing views of the surrounding mountains. Once we reach the summit, you will be surprised with amazing views. Then the trail descends. After walking for about 2 hours, you will reach Zongla, which is nestled below cliffs.

DAY 11: Trek from Dzongla to Lobuche.

DAY 12: Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep and continue to Everest Base Camp then back to Gorakshep.

Today is one of the most exciting day of the trek. After an early breakfast, trek through glacial moraines and rocky terrain to reach GorakShep. After checking in and having lunch, continue to Everest Base Camp (5,364m).
The trail follows the Khumbu Glacier ridge, and though it’s challenging, the reward is unforgettable. Reaching base camp is a proud and emotional moment. Take photos, enjoy the view, and then return to GorakShep for the night.

DAY 13: Morning hike to Kalapathar and trek to Pheriche.

Wake up early and hike to Kala Patthar, best viewpoint for sunrise over Mount Everest, along with views of Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori, Lingtren, and others. It’s a challenging but rewarding.
After the sunrise view, descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast, then follow the trail down to Thukla. From there, take the trail to Pheriche, a village located in a wide valley with a river and stunning mountain views.

DAY 14: Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar.

Today’s trail descends gradually through the open valley and passes Deboche before reaching Tengboche. From there, you’ll descend steeply to Phunki Tenga for lunch.
After lunch, make a final uphill climb through forests, reaching Sanasa. The trail then becomes easier and mostly flat as you continue to Namche Bazaar.

DAY 15: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla.

The trek usually takes 16–18 days from Lukla to Lukla, depending on acclimatization days, weather, and walking pace.

This trek is considered moderate to challenging. It is more demanding than the classic EBC trek due to:

Higher altitude exposure

The crossing of Cho La Pass

Longer trekking days in remote areas

Good physical fitness and some prior hiking experience are recommended.

No technical climbing skills are required. However, you should be comfortable hiking at high altitude. In snowy or icy conditions, microspikes or crampons may be necessary, especially when crossing Cho La Pass.

Cho La Pass is safe when crossed in good weather with proper acclimatization. The pass can be icy or snow-covered, so it is strongly recommended to cross with an experienced guide. Early morning crossings are standard for safety.

Everest Base Camp: 5,364 m

Kala Patthar (optional viewpoint): 5,545 m

Acclimatization is built into the itinerary with rest days at key locations such as Namche Bazaar and Gokyo or Dingboche. Walking slowly, staying hydrated, and following a gradual ascent schedule help reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

The best seasons are:

Spring (March–May): Warmer temperatures and blooming rhododendrons

Autumn (September–November): Clear skies and excellent mountain views

Winter trekking is possible but very cold, and Cho La Pass may be closed due to snow. Monsoon season (June–August) is not recommended.

You will need:

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

A guide is not legally required, but strongly recommended, especially for Cho La Pass. A guide increases safety, helps with navigation, and manages logistics at high altitude.

Accommodation is in local teahouses along the route. Rooms are simple but comfortable, usually with twin beds. Bathrooms are shared, and heating is available in common areas at lower elevations.

Teahouses offer a variety of meals, including:

Dal bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables)

Noodles, soups, potatoes

Breakfast items such as porridge and pancakes

Food options become simpler at higher altitudes.

This route is not ideal for complete beginners. However, fit trekkers with determination and proper guidance can successfully complete the trek. First-time trekkers may prefer the classic Everest Base Camp route.

Yes!! The Internet is accessible during whole Everest Region Trek. You can access the 3G network on mobile phones. The mobile internet is fast enough to browse and even make video calls. You will get continuous signal during the whole trek but there will be certain dark spots along the trek where connection may drop. There are limited wifi hotspots during the trek which will charge for usage only some will let you use it for free. So, for internet access we recommend you to buy a SIM and use 3G.

Yes!! You can charge mobile phones and camera batteries during the trek. At most of the places you will get to charge for free but at some places you have to pay some amount to charge. Remember that It is always better to bring your power bank with you which will be helpful.

Normally, Within 12-24 hours after ascending a certain height(1,500 to 2,500 meter above sea level) altitude sickness symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleep problems, loss of energy, and shortness of breath are seen. In case of any altitude sickness symptoms we will apply medication and descend immediately for acclimatization.

Gokyo To EBC Via Cho la pass is the trek on one of the highest pass in the Khumbu region. The highest altitude you will ascend up to during this trek is Kala Patthar (5,545m/18,187ft). We have created Itinerary in proportion to proper acclimatization so normally we don’t need oxygen on this trek. In case of altitude sickness we will descend immediately. If any altitude sickness symptoms are seen then we provide Diamox as a medication.
