Chisapani–Nagarkot Short Trek

The Chisapani–Nagarkot Short Trek? A solid choice if you’re itching to ditch Kathmandu for just a few days. This hike mixes green woods, sleepy hamlets, and wide-open mountain sights – without being too far from the city. Kick off close to Sundarijal, then follow calm paths looping through Shivapuri National Park, alongside cascades, flowing creeks, or patchwork farms.
The trail starts slow, rising bit by bit toward Chisapani – a high spot with wide-open sights of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, plus more snowy summits. You walk through tiny settlements where people smile and wave; here, you see how Tamang and Sherpa folks live day to day. Sleeping in Chisapani feels basic yet snug – great for unwinding once the hike ends, especially when sunlight fades behind the ridges.
The next day leads you over high edges and calm trails winding through woods, also farms – the Himalayas stay visible all along till you hit Nagarkot, known for catching first light. Getting up there feels unreal – on sharp mornings, peak after peak rolls out ahead, like Annapurna or Langtang, sometimes even Everest if the air’s just right.
This hike works well if you’re just starting out or fairly active. Or even if you simply want a quick break from the city bustle of Kathmandu. For shutterbugs or folks who love greenery, it’s spot-on. You’ll walk through woods, pass local villages, see big mountain views – each piece adds up to a real taste of Nepal. No bulky gear needed, nor weeks gone hiking rough trails.

Few Things to Know Before Your Trip

1. The first day feels toughest.
The path up from Sundarijal to Chisapani takes time, yet keeps a slow rhythm – mostly stairs made of rock. You can make it through, though those new to hiking might feel worn out by the end.
2. You’ll need permits.
The hike goes through Shivapuri National Park, winding along quiet trails where birds call from the trees.
You need to get a pass at the Sundarijal gate – pick it up before moving on.
3. Weather changes quickly.
Sunny starts might shift to fog or showers later – more likely during heavy rains. Bring a thin coat instead of bulky ones.
4. Chisapani might feel chilly, also pretty breezy at times.
Despite being near Kathmedu, Chisapani perches along a ridge line. When night falls, temperatures drop – more so during colder months.
5. Water or snacks might not be around every time.
Bring plenty of water – around 1 to 2 liters – along with a few snacks. Between villages, certain sections won’t have stores.
6. Expect basic accommodation in Chisapani.
Tea houses? Basic setup – one tidy bed, basic meals, no frills though.
Nagarkot offers more places to stay.
7. Paths get soggy when it rains.
The trail through the woods becomes slick when wet. However, using trekking poles makes it way easier.
8. Bring some cash.
You won’t find any ATMs along the way – tea house owners usually want cash when you buy food or stay overnight.
9. Get going when the sun rises.
You’ll love less crowded paths, better sightlines across the peaks – also, fresher air up high.
10. Sometimes the phone loses connection.
On certain parts from Chisapani to Nagarkot, signal is spotty or totally gone.
